Jersey law enforcement officials are asking all football fans in the Garden state to use a designated driver this Super Bowl Sunday – if they plan to drink alcohol during the big game.

State Attorney General Jeff Chiesa says “the Super Bowl is without question one of the most dangerous days of the year in terms of drunken driving events…the last time the Giants played in the Super Bowl in 2008 it was a record-setter- with police in New Jersey arresting 176 drunken drivers…there was also one alcohol-related death that day…we’re urging Super Bowl fans in Jersey not to turn this day of excitement and celebration into a day of sorrow and tragedy – by getting behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking.”

He says “to all those who are attending a Super Bowl party – make sure you have agreed to have someone who won’t be drinking driving you home…under no circumstances should you drink and drive, even if you’ve only had one drink – it’s not a risk worth taking, and it will put you, your loved ones and other citizens in the state in danger…let’s hope for a big Giants win on Sunday – be safe be responsible, don’t drink and drive.”

New Jersey State Police Superintendent Colonel Rick Fuentes says “we need to have an adult conversation about drinking and driving on Super Bowl Sunday -we know that we’re not going to stop people from drinking- but it’s our hope that we can stop people from drinking and driving.”

Colonel Fuentes says it’s important to develop an “exit strategy” before the big game, so you’ll be able to get home safe and sound.

“We’re going to have a hundred (extra) patrols that are going to be out there this Sunday” he says, “but we won’t say where…no good commander is going to reveal their battle plans before they go to war, right, but I can say we know where the hot-spots are.”

Chiesa says if you’re having friends over for a Super Bowl party “just make sure that somebody who’s at your home who’s not drinking- is there to take them home… if you have somebody – a friend who’s clearly had too much to drink – or a family member who’s had too much to drink – and they’re insisting on driving – yeah, you should take their keys – they shouldn’t get behind the wheel of a car…if you’re drinking – whether you live two blocks away or 10 miles away- don’t drive.”
