It may only be February, but if you haven’t enrolled your kids in summer camp yet, time is running out!

Camp fair season, which typically runs from January through March, is in full swing.

“We have a lot of people getting information right now and taking tours” said Tom Riddleberger, director of Campus Kids New Jersey in Blairstown.

He says many parents signed up right after the holidays, but there are advantages to making a decision now. “If you book early some camps offer discounts and some offer deals for parents that have multiple children.”

There are over 600 camps in New Jersey that offer everything from musical programs to art classes and sports. Camp fees vary from $100 a week to more than $800 depending on the type of camp and amenities.

While some camps have returning kids this year, Riddleberger says the economy is still an issue in many families in the state.

“A few years ago we were already completely booked by the beginning of January…this year we are about 40% full….so people are definitely stretching things out and being a little more careful with their money.”

He encourages parents to have a checklist when visiting a camp.

“Find out the camp’s reputation and record, talk with some of the counselors if they are available and walk around the camp so you and your child can get a feel if its the right place for them.”
