RIP Leonard Cohen: Bon Jovi, Springsteen cover Cohen classics

Can we all agree it's been quite an emotional week? From Election Day to Veterans Day and the avalanche of feelings in between, comes news of the death of Rock Hall of Famer Leonard Cohen. The Canadian-born artist has had a profound global impact on fans and peers, including the New Jersey music scene.

Whether you're an avid music fan or not, I'm confident you've heard at least one of his classic songs: "Hallelujah." It's become quite a popular choice for soundtracks (most notably in "Shrek") and singing competitions. Bon Jovi is among those who've covered the modern standard:

I also was pretty confident that Bruce Springsteen must have covered Cohen. And he has- but for a video clip, I had to go waaay back. A young Bruce did "Suzanne" (pre E Street Band) with The Castilles at an early gig in Freehold.

Finally, Monmouth County native Nicole Atkins has done a gorgeous version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire." She talks in the video below about the honor of being part of a Vimeo video series, “Old Ideas with New Friends" in 2012.
