STONE HARBOR — Despite a mandatory evacuation and warnings to avoid choppy waters as Harmine churned just off the New Jersey shoreline, a surfer who braved the angry ocean waves  was swept 2 miles down the coast Sunday.

The surfer entered the water in Stone Harbor without a wetsuit and was quickly swept from one jetty in about 10 minutes, Beach Patrol told 6ABC News. The man finally made his way out of the water without any serious injuries, 6ABC reported.

The incident followed voluntary evacuations of some shore towns as well as warnings by Gov. Chris Christie and authorities to stay out of the rough surf, especially as dangerous rip currents played the waters off the Jersey Shore as tropical storm Hermine swirled just over 200 miles off the coast.

New Jersey's beaches took a beating Saturday and Sunday, as waves as high as 10 feet or more began to erode the shore. As of Sunday evening, Meteorologist Dan Zarrow says "waves will remain high, rip currents high risk, and beach erosion severe through at least mid-week." The storm will move out to sea on Tuesday, but Zarrow says it won't go quietly. Those living in Cape May, Ocean and Atlantic counties will likely see some moderate flooding before Hermine bids farewell to the Garden State.
