No Hugging Policy Principal Resigns

Dino Flammia, Townsquare Media

The Principal who instituted a controversial ‘No Hugging Policy’ at the Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School has reportedly resigned his post.  Tyler Blackmore has apparently filed his resignation with the regional school district’s board on April 5th. Board President Charles Kenny told the Asbury Park Press that Blackmore’s decision was based on a personnel matter and is therefore confidential.

In an earlier Townsquare Media Report written by Dino Flammia, the controversy began when Blackmore announced over a loud-speaker on March 22nd to hundreds of students that they were in a “no hugging school”. Confused and upset students peppered their parents with questions following the announcement causing an uproar.

Officials said Blackmore’s policy was prompted by excessive, welcomed and unwelcomed hugging or physical contact between students. However, following public outrage School Superintendent David Healy said no one would be disciplined for hugging and that the matter was blown out of proportion.

Blackmore served as Principal of the Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School since July 2010. There’s no word on when the resignation will take effect.

Townsquare Media’s Dino Flammia and the Associated Press contributed to this article.
