Just like a hamstring injury is bad for a pro athlete having little or no voice does not work well for a guy who talks on the radio.

I knew I was in trouble the last couple of days as I’ve been bothered by a sore throat which I’ve kept under control by gargling with salt water and sucking on cough drops.  Hopefully I’ll be okay for tonight when we broadcast the U.S. Army All-Shore Gridiron Classic on the Shore Sports Network’s 1160 & 1310AM.

Last night I was at the master of ceremonies for the Ocean County College Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner which was held on the college campus.  Seven former Viking student/athletes were honored which brings the total to 51 since the first Hall of Fame class was inducted in 2003.  All seven spoke about the great opportunity OCC afforded them to get a good education while continuing their athletic careers and waxed nostalgic about their teammates and coaches.

Beth Root Ganley and Maggie Chussler McDuffee were soccer teammates during the 2004-2005 seasons, likewise Andrew Hawtin and Brian Waldron who played soccer together in 2003-2004.  Jennifer Nelson earned a national championship in cross country during a 2009 season in which she never lost a race.  Kevin Waldron, Brian’s younger brother, was a standout on the basketball court and in the classroom.

The senior member of this year’s class is 1975 graduate Craig Bessinger who traveled from West Virginia to tell stories about his championship wrestling squad and the friendships that remain to this day.  All in all a nice event and evening put together by Ilene Cohen, AJ Trump and the athletic department.

Football fans know tonight is the 39th Annual All-Shore Gridiron Classic which is often referred to as the Ocean-Monmouth game.  Recently-graduated football players from the two counties meet at Central Regional High School in a summer tradition that dates back to 1978.

Tonight’s game ball will be delivered by the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration team, the Black Daggers, who will jump from 12,000 feet before handing the ball off to referee Vinnie Kelly.  For more on this and the game check out shoresportsnetwork.com
