Ocean City Fire and Rescue says that crews were able to contain a  "heavy fire" inside the 7th Street Surf Shop and were able to bring it under control in about an hour. Video shows heavy smoke pouring out the front of the store as well.

The fire caused minor damage to neighboring businesses but the surf shop, however, suffered heavy damage and is considered a total loss according to Ocean City Fire & Rescue.

NBC 10 reports firefighters cut a hole in the roof to battle the blaze.

Many people gathered on the boardwalk to watch as  as dozens of off-duty personnel and firefighters from surrounding communities were called in to fight the fire and no injuries were reported. The Press of Atlantic City reports the 600 block was evacuated at the height of the fire.

According to the newspaper, that stretch of boardwalk near Gillians's Wonderland had been completely replaced during the winter.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
