If you live, work, or attend school within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone around the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant in Lacey Township, you'll want to hear sirens at about 10 AM on Tuesday, December 1. It means that you'll know if a reactor-related emergency is at hand.

Exelon Generation's semi-annual, full-volume system test applies to all 42 sirens in the zone. In an actual emergency, they would be your reminder to flip on the radio or TV for Emergency Alert System (EAS) instructions.

The test customarily lasts about three minutes. One takes place each June and December. The plant is scheduled for retirement in 2019.
