Passing On The Majors – Hometown View

Tuesday was rather exciting for Mark McCoy and when it was over he decided a full scholarship to Wake Forest University was better than $142,000.

That’s what McCoy was offered by the Atlanta Braves who were going to select the left-handed pitcher in the 7th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

When McCoy said “no” to that amount the Braves passed on picking him but two rounds later the Los Angeles Angels called and took their shot. They offered the Barnegat senior $123,000 to sign with their club but again he said thanks but no thanks and the Angels went in a different direction.

Finally the Milwaukee Brewers drafted him in the 26th round; taking a shot that at some point this summer McCoy may change his mind and decide to play pro baseball now instead of later.

Published reports say that the 18-year old had already decided that if he was not taken before the 6th round he would honor his commitment to Wake Forest which is what he plans to do. McCoy, who was also a standout football player at Barnegat, will be eligible to be drafted again following his junior season with the Demon Deacons.
