Postal worker sentenced for embezzlement

A letter carrier who worked in Cape May County and lives in Ocean County heads to prison for a year, in connection with a scheme to steal and cash blank U.S. Postal Service money orders.

Jonel Normil, 26, of Little Egg Harbor, was sentenced in Newark, for his guilty plea to acount of conspiring to embezzle and convert the money orders for his use and for the use of others, according to the office of New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.

He was also ordered to serve three years of parole supervision.

Normil admitted palming hundreds of money orders from post offices in his home base of Cape May Court House and in Stone Harbor, giving them to accomplices who altered them to appear legitimate.

Investigators said that they stamped each for amounts of $900 or $1,000, cashed some at post offices in New Jersey, New York and Georgia, and depositing others in bank accounts.

Normil was represented by Mays Landing attorney H. Robert Boney. The government's case was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rahul Agarwal.
