Some quick hitters heading into what for many is a long holiday weekend:

It’s been a wild ride for former Brick resident Todd Durkin and the ex-Green Dragon quarterback now finds himself in the finals of STRONG, the NBC competition reality show.  Durkin and his Yellow team partner Brittany survived the elimination tower again and will face the Blue team next Thursday for the $500,000 first prize.

Todd, who is a gym owner and trainer in San Diego, actually filmed the show last fall in Florida but takes his 34,000 Twitter followers through each week like it’s just happening…I know because I’m one of them.

How does Red Bank Catholic replace highly-successful football coach Jim Portela?  How about with the man who coached the Caseys for ten seasons before Portela replaced him.  Frank Edgerly is returning to his alma mater after spending the last seven years with the NFL’s New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns along with brief stints at Rutgers & Vanderbilt.  Portela announced last week he was leaving education to return to the financial world and Athletic Director Joe Montano completed a quick search by bringing Edgerly back home.

A baseball season filled with more downs than ups ended for Barnegat and highly-touted pitcher Jason Groome Thursday.  The 8th seed Bengals dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to South Jersey Group 2 top-seed West Deptford.  Groome allowed just one earned run and two hits while striking out 12 but it was not good enough.

The hard-throwing lefthander will now turn his full attention to MLB’s first-year player draft on June 9th where he’s expected to be among the top picks and an instant millionaire.

It was not an especially great day for Ocean County baseball as Toms River South, Brick and Manchester were the only teams to advance to the sectional semifinals with victories.  The season ended for Toms River North, Point Boro, Central, Lacey, Point Beach and Donovan Catholic with losses in the state tournament.
