A note for anyone who finds highway straightaways a temptation and curves an agility test, who thinks speed limits are suggestions, or who thinks impaired driving is a sport - Route 539 in Ocean County is not the place for it, especially during the next month.

Beginning August 15, officers from 12 local, county and state law enforcement agencies in 15 jurisdictions go on the alert for unsafe, distracted and aggressive drivers on the highway, which has been the scene of 11 crash deaths since 2013.

Details in unmarked cars will prowl for violators, and teams in marked cars will handle stops and ticketing. However, the goal is not to run up a big score on tickets - it's to reinforce the need for safe driving and responsibility behind the wheel.

Patrols will be fielded by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Sheriff's Department, New Jersey State Police, Joint Base Military Police, and police departments in Tuckerton, Little Egg Harbor, Stafford, Barnegat, Lacey Township, Manchester, Jackson and Plumsted.
