BARNEGAT - A garbage can exploded in Ocean County early Thursday morning.

ABC 7 Eyewitness News reported the explosion happened around 1:30 a.m. in a trash can outside a home on Village Drive at Port Drive in Barnegat, in the Settlers Village development not far from Route 9.

The home is not far from the Lillian Dunfee Elementary School on Barnegat Boulevard.

Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastrondardy referred calls to the Ocean County Proseucutor's Office. Officers arriving at Barnegat Police headquarters would not comment on the reported incident.

Some neighbors said they were shaken out of bed by a "loud bang"  and were concerned following the explosion in Seaside Park a month ago while some slept through it. One woman's 7-year-old son was upset and could not get back to sleep.

Resident Tripp Rogers said that by 7 a.m. the scene was cleared except for a police vehicle that blocked the entrance to Port Drive.

A trash can in Seaside Park that exploded on Sept. 17 was the first of a series of explosions in New Jersey and New York connected to Ahmed Rahami.

Vin Ebenau contributed to this report.
