Rutgers group hosts college fair for students in the U.S. illegally

NEW BRUNSWICK — A Rutgers University student organization is hosting a college fair Saturday for students who are in the country illegally.

The event presented by the group UndocuRutgers takes place at the university's Cook Campus off Route 1 in New Brunswick for both undocumented high school students and college students.

The event comes two days after a march on campus and through the city to protest feared immigration policies of President-elect Donald Trump.

According to the group's website, the event will also offer information on the state DREAM Act and the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

Rutgers President Robert Barchi this week said the school will protect the privacy of undocumented immigrants attending the university. In a statement, Barchi said “Rutgers police do not inquire into nor record the immigration status of students or other persons unless a serious crime has been committed.”

“Rutgers University does not use E-verify for any purposes other than to comply with longstanding federal law regarding employment eligibility. Immigration status is not a factor in student housing decisions.”
