While shocking and horrifying Sunday’s mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, is something most of us will likely forget very quickly. That might sound cold and callous but it’s not meant to be as we simply have become hardened to news like this.

The killing of 50 innocent people is indeed jaw-dropping and especially for those in the Florida city it will take time to recover but let’s be honest. How much will you think about this today?  The truth is that we live in times in which bad news is expected and good news is far too uncommon.

20, 30 or 40 years ago an incident like this was unimaginable. Now we just hope it doesn’t happen too close to us or involve anyone we might know.  Motives no longer seem necessary and random seems to rule the day which is the most concerning part of the sick world we live in.  Unless you want to stay locked in your home there are no guarantees that you or your loved ones can avoid violence.

We search for answers to all of this and in truth there are none.  While I’m all for anti-gun legislation we would be foolish to think that will solve the problem.  Yes strengthen laws especially when it comes to automatic weapons but those that want to purchase them will.  Just like with drugs where there’s a will there’s a way.

The bottom line is that the irrational force of evil does not fear what we rational people fear the most: death.  It’s easy to commit a crime but not easy to get away with it.  The same rule applies when it comes to violent attacks as in most cases the perpetrator has no intention of getting away with it and in the end expects to die.  Without that fear of what most of us deem precious you’re facing an opponent with nothing to lose.
