Simply Clawsome Baseball in Lakewood

While you were talking about the heat wave and watching the Summer Olympics you might not have noticed that the Lakewood BlueClaws are playing their best baseball of the season and very much in the race for the playoffs.

Of course most people go to see the BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park because it’s an affordable night of entertainment with some great promotions.  Unlike a major league baseball team a minor league franchise does not depend on winning records to be successful but it sure helps.

In their 16^th season the Single “A” affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies has won three South Atlantic League Championships (2006, 2009, 2010) but since winning that last title the BlueClaws have had only one winning season and have not returned to the playoffs.  It looked like more of the same in mid-June when Lakewood finished 6^th out of 7 teams in the first half of the Northern Division standings.

There was not much reason to think things would turn around but they have and the BlueClaws are 27-22 in the second half race and just a half-game behind Hagerstown and Kannapolis in the battle for first place.  Another difference between the majors and minors is the season is split into two halves so the BlueClaws are very much in the race for a spot in the playoffs.

The schedule favors our guys because the BlueClaws play 13 of their final 21 games at FirstEnergy Park beginning with a doubleheader tonight (5:05) against the Hickory Crawdads.  If you have not been to a game this season now is the time because in addition to a fun night with great promotions you get to see a team competing for the playoffs.  You’ll also get to see players like Jose Pujols, who leads the league with 22 home runs and his next homer will set a BlueClaws single-season record.
