Steamy, stormy weather about to make a grand return to NJ
New Jersey's stretch of pleasant summer weather with low humidity is about to end, with a steamy and stormy forecast for the rest of the week.
I do not like this forecast.
Don't get me wrong - it's summer, it's August, and it's supposed to be hot and humid. There are many New Jerseyans who crave this brand of summer heat.
But the humid and stormy weather that will build into New Jersey from Wednesday through Sunday? Ugh. No thanks.
If you have yard work or other outdoor activities, Tuesday will certainly be the best day of the next week to complete them. Continuing Sunday's and Monday's warmth and low humidity, Tuesday will be a pleasant summer day. High temperatures will once again warm to the mid to upper 80s. Sunshine should be abundant - but I can't rule out some clouds and even a spot showers popping up late in the afternoon hours.
The aforementioned changes will loom closer to the Garden State starting Tuesday night. Atmospheric moisture (read: humidity) will jump upwards starting around 11 p.m. Tuesday, making it quite muggy and uncomfortable by Wednesday morning. Low temperatures will only drop to the lower 70s (at best). Skies will become mostly cloudy, and again a spot shower can't be ruled out.
The warm front lifting through New Jersey will also probably spawn some more widespread showers and thunderstorms Wednesday morning.
Now, here's the problem... Once the warm front gets just north of New Jersey, it's expected to stall (or get "stuck"). So, not only will the Garden State plunge into a hotter and more humid air mass, but the front will form a static "highway" for storm systems. Such fronts often provide a nearly continuous chance of thunderstorms, which will be the case for New Jersey for the rest of the week.
So with this river of weather systems in the neighborhood, another round of scattered thunderstorms will be possible for Wednesday afternoon and evening. As dew points climb to the 70s and high temperatures make it to around 90 degrees on Wednesday, some of these storms could produce heavy rain and/or gusty winds.
And then we begin a streak of very consistently steamy and stormy days. Not a fun combination, but it is pretty typical for this time of year.
Thursday will be hot and humid, with highs in the lower 90s and a heat index in the upper 90s. Scattered thunderstorms will be possible, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Friday will be hot and humid, with highs in the lower 90s and a heat index in the upper 90s. Scattered thunderstorms will be possible, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Saturday will be hot and humid, with highs in the lower 90s and a heat index in the upper 90s. Scattered thunderstorms will be possible, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Sunday will be hot and humid, with highs in the lower 90s and a heat index in the upper 90s. Scattered thunderstorms will be possible, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Notice a trend?
The heat and humidity look to finally break as a cold front sweeps through the Garden State on Monday. That front will potentially produce a period of steady rain and then usher in cooler air for the middle of next week.
I believe a good chunk of New Jersey will experience 2 to 4 inches of rain between Wednesday and Monday - possibly more if we get the kind of localized heavy deluges that plagued the state two weeks ago. As the ground becomes saturated, we'll have to monitor carefully for flash flood concerns.
So, ladies and gentlemen, get those air conditioners and umbrellas ready. You will need them soon!
