Construction of a four-mile long steel wall that runs from Mantoloking to Brick is expected to begin in July. Springfield-based EIC Associates was awarded the contract to build the 45-foot tall storm protection storm-protection barrier at a cost of $23.8 million dollars in May.

According to a report in the Star Ledger, on July 7th the firm will be driving the steel wall 30 feet into the ground and once it’s complete, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will move forward with a beach replenishment project.

During Superstorm Sandy, that section of the northern barrier peninsula was breached, cutting a channel from the ocean to the Barnegat Bay. Hundreds of homes in Mantoloking and Brick were destroyed as a result.

The Federal Highway Administration is paying 80 percent of the cost, with the state paying the rest.
