A routine traffic stop in Manchester ends with the seizure of 569 bags of heroin that police say were destined for the streets of Ocean County, and charges against two suspects from out of town. Police give much of the credit to the sharp senses of Storm, the drug-sniffing K-9 officer.

Joseph V. Jack, 27, of Keansburg, and Timothy B. McCann, Jr., 37, of Brick Township, each face three possession-related counts. Jack is also charged with hindering apprehension.

According to police, a motor vehicle violation predicated the Wednesday night stop of the 2005 Nissan Altima driven by McCann on Route 547 on the eastern end of the township.

Allegedly spotting drug paraphernalia in the Altima's cabin, officers summoned Patrolman Marc Micciulla and Storm.

The furry half of the team's response to a peripheral sniff led to a search and the discovery of heroin with an estimated value of $5,500 in the trunk. Police said that Jack was carrying a significant amount of the drug as well.

Jack and McCann were sent to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, with bail for each set at $50,000, and the car was impounded pending forfeiture.
