As always my annual list of the Ten Commandments of the Beach garnered its fair share of attention and feedback.

A few people mentioned that I should have included turning down the radio which, by the way, was one of the Ten Commandments the first time I did this quite a few years ago.  However I don’t really hear anyone playing the radio on the beach as everyone seems to have their own personal device and head phones.  Of course that could be a problem on other beaches.

One strong possibility to make the list next year has to do with feeding seagulls which can be a major problem, especially if you’re not wearing a hat.

I’ve witnessed the bird frenzy on a few occasions when someone has started tossing pieces of bread around. Clearly a “no no” on any beach when people are around.  Another suggestion for the list has to do with walking on the dunes and I could not agree more, especially when parents let their children do this even though there is a sign staring them in the face.  Of course there are only ten commandments so in order to add a couple I have to drop a couple. Glad I have an entire year to work on this.

Congratulations to our morning news anchor Diane DeOliveira on finishing first in the women’s division of the 16th annual Pine Beach 5K on Sunday.  Diane’s time of 19:17.9 was more than a minute ahead of the second place woman.  Scott Sarno was first across the finish line among the nearly 400 runners in a time of 17:05.8 for the 3.1 mile race presented by the Ocean Running Club.

Proceeds benefit the Pine Beach Volunteer First Company and also fund scholarships at the three Toms River public high schools and Donovan Catholic.

In sports it’s natural to try and compare athletes and debate their greatness.  When it comes to the greatest basketball player of all time the overwhelming choice in arguments is Michael Jordan and now many are trying to make the case for LeBron James.

They are two very different players and they are playing in different eras which makes comparisons even more challenging.  While Jordan clearly had a better supporting cast his six NBA titles puts him in a class of his own as King James has yet to win one, even though his performance in this year’s playoffs has been legendary.

They are both all-time greats and there’s nothing wrong with leaving it at that for now!
