Summer’s Perfect Streak

If we were playing Jeopardy in which you give the answer first I would say, “Saturday, May 24th.” You might then respond with, “When was the last weekend day which was not beautiful?” Yes the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend was cloudy and cool but we rebounded with glorious weather the next two days of the holiday weekend and it’s been smooth sailing since.

This past weekend was a perfect 10 with sunny skies and dry weather and it made for fabulous beach conditions and a sixth straight sunny weekend. It’s a bit early to pin down Alan Kasper but that streak might be coming to an end. Plenty of heat and humidity this week and we could be impacted by a tropical depression forming off the coast of Florida which might make its way up the coast and bring us some wet weather for the 4th of July. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that is not the case.

The U.S. soccer team is not alone when it comes to Americans advancing to the round of 16 in the World Cup. Beachwood’s Mark Geiger will make history today when he serves as referee for the match between France and Nigeria in Brasilia. The 39-year old former Lacey Township High School math teacher will be the first American referee to work a game in the knockout stage and the assignment will be his third of this World Cup. Geiger and his assistants, including fellow American Sean Hurd worked a pair of matches in the group stage and have received positive comments for the way they have handled things on the field.

The Brick Township Board of Education will hold a ceremony later today to officially change the name of their Primary Learning Center on Chambers Bridge Road to Warren Wolf Elementary School as no longer will the facility house all of the township’s kindergartners. The re-naming of the school is a fitting tribute to the record-setting former Green Dragons football coach who also served Brick in many other capacities.

I received quite a few comments over a picture of me and Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari I posted last week on Facebook and Twitter which was taken at the Water Street Grille in Toms River. Calipari was on his way to the NBA Draft in Brooklyn that day but there is more to why he was in the area. Turns out I’m told he is building a summer home in Lavallette.
