Teens ID’d in theft of decorations from amazing Christmas lights display
Police have found the thieves they believe made off with decorations from spectacular Christmas light display in Ocean Township.
A 17-year-old boy from Long Branch and two from Brooklyn were identified by police as the trio seen in a surveillance video who took decorations off the lawn of Shane MacCary's home on Timber Drive early on Sunday morning.
Police say they were also able to recover the decorations and return them to MacCary. It was not clear in what condition the decorations were found or where they were found.
Charges for the three juveniles, who were not identified by police, will be forwarded to the Monmouth County Family Division Court in Freehold for disposition.
The annual display, with its own Facebook page, uses 68,000 lights to bring Christmas cheer to Timber Drive in Ocean Township. It takes Shane MacCary two weeks to put up, and is all pulled together by 64 channels of computer control. People come from all over to see it.
MacCary said many of the decorations are irreplaceable and was concerned that the thieves would toss the items they took because of media attention to the theft.

Ocean Township Police have several suggestions to secure outdoor light displays.
- Use locking cords on decorations that plug into electrical outlets.
- Connect zip ties to power cables to further fasten them to nearby fences, trees and other barriers.
- Position the most expensive decorations close to your home, near windows or up on your roof.
- Use motion controlled lighting and security cameras.
