I know 4th of July has passed but it seems the euphoria of the holiday coupled with the success of the U.S. Women’s Soccer team has us feeling a bit more patriotic these days.
With that said I refer to this month’s “The Average Guy” feature in Men’s Health magazine which surveyed men on their feelings about the red, white and blue.

• 2 in 3 men own an American Flag and 59% of them know the proper way to fold it.

• 37% said they identify themselves as true patriots.

• 53% of male baseball fans mouth the words to “The Star Spangled Banner.”

• The average guy says the hamburger is the American food item that is never
as good abroad as it is in the USA. By the way, 43% of men say hot dogs are more American than hamburgers.

• 52% of men would be okay with putting a woman on the $20 bill…interestingly enough 44% don’t know that Andrew Jackson is currently on the $20. My guess is if you followed up now the top woman candidate to be on the $20 bill would be Carli Lloyd.

• 38% of those men surveyed said their ultimate driving machine will always be American made. By the way, the three car models with the highest percentage of U.S. parts and labor are the Ford F-Series pickup, Buick Enclave and Chevy Corvette.

• Budweiser is still considered by most men “America’s Beer.”

• In an average year about 4,200 men head to hospital emergency rooms because of fireworks accidents. Heading that list this year is New York Giant Jason Pierre-Paul, an early candidate for dummy of the year.

• More than 50% of women find that watching fireworks with their guys can lead to a romantic interlude. I’ll leave that one alone.

• When asked to name the rock song they find most patriotic the overwhelming choice was Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA.” I know many view the song as actually anti-American because its anti-war but it really sums up what’s best about our country and that is the ability to be critical at times. For what it’s worth my favorites are “America” by Neil Diamond and Simon & Garfunkel’s often overlooked “America” where they count the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Final note here. We spend some $4 million a year on imported American flags, most of them from China. There’s something very wrong with that.
