It’s been around since 1937 and is often called the best-kept secret in Toms River, even though it’s not meant to be.

The Toms River Student Loan Fund was created by a group of local businessmen at the urging of Dr. Edgar Fink who was the Supervising Principal of Toms River High School. The idea was to help assist graduates of THE one high school in town who were going to attend college by making small loans available to them. They would then pay those low-interest loans back upon graduation and those funds would be used to make other loans available.

78 years later the names might have changed but the mission has not and Dr. Fink can be very proud of what he created. The all-volunteer Toms River Student Loan Fund assists dozens of graduates each year of the now three high schools with loans not designed to take care of their full tuition but rather help with essentials like books, computers and those little things that are often still hanging out there as kids depart for college.

Applications for the loans are made available through the guidance departments of Toms River High Schools East, North and South in the spring and the process is a very simple one. Students can take loans for each of the four years they are in college or even while in grad school, like it was meant to be from the beginning the fund operates in the true spirit of “helping thy neighbor” as loans being paid back are the source of future ones.

As a member of the Board of Trustees for 14 years I can tell you our fundraising efforts are modest ones which is why you don’t hear all that much about us. In addition to helping students we also salute the teachers who have often molded them and on Thursday, October 15th we will pay tribute to the 19 current Teachers of the Year in the Toms River Regional School District. We will do so during our annual Cocktail Reception and Recognition Dinner at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Toms River.

The evening will also highlight a chosen student from each of the three schools selected for their well-rounded achievements and contributions. Schools Superintendent David M. Healy will be among the guests and participants and once again I will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

Those who might be interested in attending and supporting our mission and some outstanding teachers can call the accounting firm of Totaro, Totaro & Siegel at 732- 341-1773 for ticket information.
