A little of this and a little of that heading into what for many is a short holiday week:

While it’s a bit brisk this morning the weather is expected to warm up throughout the week and we could hit 60 on Thanksgiving Day which is especially welcome by those who have to travel. However I have heard people complaining about the unseasonably warm weather we have had this month and saying it doesn’t feel like the start of the holiday season. Really? Tell me how you feel the first morning you wake up and have to scrape ice off your windshield.

I’m not a New York Jets fan at all but with the Giants on a bye this week the only way to get my medium Dunkin' Donuts coffee for 25 cents today was if the Jets beat the Texans Sunday. They didn’t which means two straight weeks I was not able to cash in on this season’s promotion for DD perks members. Next Sunday the Jets host Miami and the Giants visit Washington. I like my chances.

The magic ride through soccer’s post-season ended in disappointing fashion for Toms River South as they fell to Mendham 4-0 in the Group 3 Boys championship final Sunday at Kean University. The South Jersey champs came up just short in winning the school’s second overall group title but had a season to remember.

While it’s been a horrible season in many ways for Rutgers football the women’s soccer team is providing a fall highlight as they have advanced to the elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history following Sunday’s 4-0 blanking of Connecticut. Next up for the Scarlet Knights is a date with top-ranked Virginia later this week.

The Monmouth University football team closed their season in impressive fashion with a 23-9 win at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, North Carolina over the weekend. The Hawks finished their second season in the Big South with a 3-3 conference record and were 5-6 overall with the help of a pair of former Ocean County scholastic standouts.

Senior scholar-athlete Joe Johnson (Manchester Township) closed his Hawks career with an interception in the final seconds while sophomore Mike Basile (Brick Memorial) set a school record for tackles in a season, finishing with 119. Best part for Monmouth is he has two years left to break his own record.
