Thanks to a dramatic extra-inning victory the Jersey Shore team is a win away from defending its championship in the 30th annual Phillies Carpenter Cup Classic.

Kyle Missry, who just graduated from St. Rose High School, belted a tie-breaking home run in the top of the 10th inning at Citizens Bank Park Monday as Jersey Shore edged Delaware County 6-5 in the second semifinal of the day. The victory sends the group of Ocean & Monmouth County high school players into the finals this morning (10 a.m.) against SOL National/Bicentennial, which is made up of players from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Jersey Shore is seeking to become the first back-to-back winner in the baseball tournament since 1991-92.

John Musolf coached many Carpenter Cup teams over the years during his 19-year tenure as the head baseball coach at Manchester Township High School. However the school will have to replace him as Musolf officially retires following tonight’s high school graduation after 36 years as a history teacher and coach. He had the honor and pleasure to coach both his baseball-playing sons (Jared and Travis) and helped build the Hawks into a consistent title contender in Class B South. Musolf coached several other sports during his time at Manchester, including track and field, soccer, swimming and even freshman football.

If the latest developments surrounding Pete Rose are true then baseball’s all-time hit leader can pretty much forget about the Hall of Fame, unless he wants to pay to get in like everyone else. An ESPN report says evidence exists which shows that Rose bet on baseball in his last season as an active player with the Cincinnati Reds, something he has vehemently denied in the past.

The report is based on copies of a notebook from a noted Rose associate who allegedly placed the bets with mob-connected bookmakers in New York. Rose had been hopeful of being reinstated by new baseball commissioner Rob Manfred but Monday’s blockbuster may put an end to that and any discussion of him being inducted into baseball’s shrine in Cooperstown, New York. It would be a sad but fitting end for a great player who will likely fade into the sunset.
