The Year Of The Golden Griffin

We are going from summer to very much fall-like weather conditions this weekend. Today will be a beach day for those who can take advantage of it but by Sunday we are looking at rain and temperatures not getting out of the 50’s.

Monsignor Donovan High School
Monsignor Donovan High School (Monsignor Donovan High School)

Monsignor Donovan High School is celebrating its 50th Anniversary throughout the year and there will be several alumni and special events as part of “The Year of the Golden Griffin.” Saturday night Donovan’s boy’s soccer team will host Pinelands and all former players are invited. There will be a pre-game tent with refreshments and special tribute for the 2002 Shore Conference championship team. Weather permitting an alumni soccer game is scheduled for Sunday at 1:30 at Whitty Fields and all former Griffin players are asked to contact Coach Ken Oliver at the school.

Meanwhile weather will not be a factor at Saturday’s Girls Volleyball matches in which Donovan will host Brick Memorial as part of “Dig Pink.” It’s a national campaign to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month as well as education and research in the fight against the disease. The Griffins and Mustangs will play freshman, JV and varsity matches beginning at 1:30 in Gepp Gym…spectators are asked to wear pink and there will be a $2 donation at the door.

A big weekend for Donovan actually starts tonight when they host Point Boro in a key Class B South football game. Both teams have 2-0 division records and tonight’s winner will take over sole possession of first place.

Tonight’s Open MRI of Wall Game of Week on the Shore Sports Network finds us at Brick Memorial where the Mustangs welcome in Neptune in a battle of 4-0 teams that are among the best in the shore. Kickoff is at 7pm and the game can be heard on 105.7FM as well as shoresportsnetwork.com. The other big game of the evening and weekend is Asbury Park at Point Beach with a Garnett Gulls victory giving them a good shot at winning their first division title in 15 years.

It will be interesting to follow the presidential campaign these next couple of weeks as many believe that Mitt Romney’s debate performance from Wednesday night will revitalize a campaign that seemed heading in the wrong direction. You can be sure that President Obama will bring his “A game” to the next debate but it likely won’t have the same audience as the first.
