The dog that severely bit a Toms River 3-year-old boy in the face has been surrendered and euthanized.

Toms River Police said the boy was playing with the dog, identified as a 6-year-old neutered male Presa Canario, in the kitchen of their home in the Normandy Beach section of Toms River when he was bit around 8:15 p.m. Monday night.

The boy, who has not been identified by police, was flown to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden for treatment. He remains in stable condition with "extensive facial wounds" according to Toms River Police.

The owners of the dog voluntarily turned the dog over to Toms River Animal Control so he could be humanly euthanized.

The American Kennel Club describes mastiffs as "sweet-tempered, patient family companions and guardians who take best to gentle training" that are very large.

"Eternally loyal, mastiffs are protective of their loved ones, and their natural wariness of strangers makes it essential that they be trained and socialized in early puppyhood," the club writes on its website.
