Toms River Officials Set To Move on Shorefront Eminent Domain

Toms River beachfront homeowners who oppose access to their land by the Army Corps of Engineers to build protective dunes stand a step closer to losing pieces of their land through the eminent domain process.

At Tuesday’s public meeting, the Toms River Township Council expects to set aside $3,500,000 to compensate property owners for land they plan to take by condemnation proceedings.

The allocation is being entered into an existing bond ordinance that was passed in April, to cover payments to landowners for what are termed “small strips” of land. The move adds to the township’s debt service for 15 years.

“The town has not made an offer yet to those homeowners for the easements but expects it will be only a nominal amount,” said Council President George Wittmann in a prepared release.

The governing body expects to have all agreements completed by March to give the Corps a green light for construction by June.

The ordinance also covers construction and replacement of boardwalks and beaches, and improvements for township parks.

The meeting starts at 5 PM.
