Toms River Teen Dies in Car Crash
A Toms River teen and graduate of Monsignor Donovan died and another injured in a single-car crash early Saturday morning.
Toms River Police in a press release say Conner Hanfin, age 18, was behind the wheel of a 2006 Honda Civic that went through a stop sign on Yellowbank Road at 1:30 a.m. at Vaughn Avenue, hopped a sidewalk at the end of the cul-de-sac, went into the woods and hit a tree.
Passenger Francis Duddy, age 19, was pronounced dead at the scene.He and Hanfin are members of the Monsignor Donovan class of 2013.
Hanfin was flown via medical helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he remains in critical condition.
Duddy, is the son of Monsignor Donovan football coach Dan Duddy. “Please keep the Duddy and Hanifin families in your prayers,” posted the school on its website, which noted that the school’s Winter Formal dance for Saturday night had been canceled.
“I have known Dan Duddy for some 30 years and he is more than a friend but someone I have the utmost respect for. Dan has dedicated his life to trying to point young people in the right direction through faith, family and friendship. For him, his wife Maura, and their other children to have to go through this will test their faith,” said WOBM and Shore Sports Network Sports Director Kevin Williams. “However their family, friends and the Monsignor Donovan community will show their love for Francis and the Duddy family.
Francis played football for his father at Monsignor Donovan and was also a member of the wrestling and lacrosse teams according to the Shore Sports Network. He was a running back and linebacker on the 2012 football team that won Monsignor Donovan’s first division title since 1993. Duddy was also a standout lacrosse player who was an All-Class A South second-team selection and played for the Ocean County squad in last spring’s Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches’ Association All-Star Game.
No changes have been filed as the crash remains under investigation. Arrangements have not yet been announced.
