Tracy Martin told The Associated Press on Sunday that he thanked the NBA’s Miami Heat for “taking notice” of the killing. Martin is the father of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed in Sanford, Fla. on Feb. 26 by a neighborhood watch volunteer who claimed self-defense and has not been arrested.

Wade tweeted a photo of himself Friday wearing a hooded top in tribute to the boy, who was wearing a hoodie when he was killed. James tweeted a photo of 13 Heat players wearing hoodies later that day.

More athletes, including Ray Lewis of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, are expected at a rally Monday.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson is calling Trayvon Martin a “martyr” and says the Florida teenager’s death at the hands of a neighborhood watch volunteer should be used as an opportunity to draw renewed attention to civil rights issues.

Martin was remembered in churches around the country Sunday, with preachers and worshippers wearing hooded sweatshirts similar to the one that Martin wore the night he was killed.
