Some left field comments this morning

August 30th is the date I would pick in the “When does Chris Christie drop out of the presidential race pool.”  Let’s face it, it’s over for our governor whose campaign never really got going and political career was pretty much doomed by the “Bridgegate” fiasco.  The real interesting thing to watch will be how he handles his final 2-plus years running New Jersey and will his lackluster bid to seek higher office humble him.  Likely it will not.

As for Donald Trump.  What else is there to say except it gets more interesting by the day?

Great job by the New York Yankees in having Chris Singleton take batting practice and throw out the first pitch Monday night as part of their annual HOPE week.  Singleton is a 20-year old college baseball player from Charleston, South Carolina whose mother was among the nine people killed two months ago in the Emmanuel AME Church shootings.  He made national headlines a few days later when he said could forgive the shooter because “love is stronger than hate.”

ESPN’s E:60 did a terrific feature on Singleton over the weekend and he is truly an amazing young man and living tribute to his mother who was a high school speech pathologist and part-time minister.  His day in New York started with an appearance on the “Today” show in which he was surprised by a visit from the Yankees Brett Gardener, Alex Rodriguez and Dellin Betances.

As far as movies go Ricki and the Flash is good but nothing special.  You might not have even heard of it as it only made $14 million in its first two weeks since being released earlier this month.  What is special is the amazing talent of 3-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep who plays the role of a hard-rocking guitar player who basically bailed on her family to pursue a musical career that never really panned out.

It might not be a role you picture Streep in but the 66-year old learned how to play electric guitar and the live music performances are the real thing.  She is without question the greatest actress of this generation and clearly not afraid to take on new challenges even at this point of her career.
