Wet weather is in New Jersey's forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, along with above normal temperatures.

Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, December 1, 2015...

Wet Start to December

Welcome to December, and welcome to climatological winter! (Meteorologists like using calendar months for seasons - it makes the math easier.) The combination of a low pressure system and a warm front rising up from the south are contributing to a wet forecast for New Jersey for the first two days of the new month.

The Garden State has already seen widespread light rain this morning. As of this writing, rainfall totals have been on the light side, with the top totals just over a quarter-inch so far.

Models show morning showers will transition to steadier light to moderate rain this afternoon and early evening. It's important to note that temperatures will stay above freezing throughout this weather event, so the exclusive precipitation type here is rain. High temperatures today, in fact, will pop above normal to around 50 degrees in North Jersey and near 60 degrees in South Jersey.

Overnight, lighter rain and drizzle is expected to continue, with lows falling mostly into the 40s... Again, well above freezing.

Pockets of Heavy Rain

As the warm front lifts across New Jersey on Wednesday, temperatures will bump into the lower 60s for at least the southern part of the state. The warmer air will contribute to pockets of steadier and/or heavier rain throughout Wednesday. Even though there could be scattered downpours, I still don't anticipate any severe weather or flooding.

The rain should substantially end by midnight Wednesday night, with a few showers and sprinkles possible through daybreak on Thursday. Rainfall from this point forward will likely total between 1 and 2 inches across the state.

The Rain Finally Ends

The cold front that sweeps out the rain will also usher in cooler air for Thursday. As skies clear to sunshine, high temperatures will be limited to about 50 degrees - that's right around normal for the first week of December. We'll probably have to contend with a stiff breeze on Thursday too, sustained at 10 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 40 mph.

By Friday and the weekend, winds should be lighter, and New Jersey will experience sunny skies and seasonable temperatures. Considering it is now December, we really can't ask for much better than that!
