While most of us are winding down Labor Day celebrations on September 7, United Water Toms River (UWTR) workers will be starting about eight weeks of maintenance on hydrants and mains in its service area of Toms River, South Toms River and parts of Berkeley Township.

The semi-annual task involves testing of public hydrants and cleaning of water mains. Private hydrants are to be tested in the first two weeks of November.

According to information from UWTR, work this year will be conducted in rotating shifts, days and nights, weather permitting, except Saturdays, Labor Day and October 12, Columbus Day.

"United Water follows an essential hydrant testing and water main cleaning program twice a year, in the Fall and Spring, in order to remove sediments from mainline pipes to enhance water quality and also to verify and ample flow of water for firefighting," said Director of Operations Jim Mastrokalos in a prepared statement.

As always, work in your neighborhood might result in low pressure, reduced flow, and discolored or cloudy water. The company recommends running cold water for several minutes to allow fresh water to enter the pipes.

Check the United Water Toms River web page for a daily update of targeted areas and dates in the "Outage Map" tab. Store some tap water in the fridge, so you won't need to turn on the taps during maintenance. Also, avoid using clothes washers or dishwashers during maintenance. And when you see the trucks, cones and workers on the street, give them room when driving by.
