Francis D. Hartnett, 47, was pronounced dead at 12:36 PM, about an hour after police responded to a call by a family member who expressed concerns that he might be suicidal and was trying to harm himself.

According to authorities, officers sent to the Wild Oaks Drive dwelling got no response from inside and proceeded to enter, encountering Hartnett wielding a knife.

Officials said Hartnett advanced toward them and refused several orders to drop the weapon, at which point several officers fired their service weapons. Hartnett absorbed several rounds, authorities said.

Investigators added that Hartnett suffered depression and had experienced several previous attempts to take his own life.

At this point, the officers' actions have not been given a classification. The Prosecutor's Office says that final findings will be released after a required report to the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice.
