I know there is snow on the ground and it’s pretty cold this morning but I think we can rest assured that what we got Friday was the last real blast of winter.

Before long brown will turn to green, buds will begin blooming, birds will be chirping and the horrible winter of 2015 will be but a distant memory. How’s that for the glass is half full? Let’s bounce a bit this morning:

NCAA Bracket Update- Let me take you back to my Hometown View of last Wednesday when I said for the first time in years a #12 seed would not beat a #5 which was right on. I also said I would not be shocked if 14th seed Georgia State beat #3 Baylor which was correct and called for early exits by Kansas and Georgetown.

However two of my final four are gone in Villanova and Iowa State although I did predict Michigan State would surprise. Bottom line: like Nova I’m done.

Roads, Roads, Roads- Local, county and state officials will have their hands full trying to fix the growing pothole problem and the latest round of snow did not help. Even roads that are usually pretty much pothole-free are in bad shape and with budget shortfalls everywhere it will likely be a case on putting a band aid where much more is needed. Here’s hoping you don’t lose a tire or worse in one of the many growing craters around the area.

Save the Seraphs- Maybe just maybe the doors to Mater Dei Prep will remain open after this current school year ends. Organizers of the Save the Seraphs Fund
said that Saturday’s sold-out gala at Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands raised $95,000 and among those in attendance was alumnus Brian Williams who donated $50,000 to the cause. The suspended NBC News Anchor is a 1977 graduate and his donation brings the fundraising total to $962,000…just $38,000 short of the one million dollars reportedly needed to keep the school open.

Senior Softball- The Berkeley Senior Softball League is the largest of its kind in Ocean County with more than 140 over the age of 60 but not over the hill players.
There is even a separate division for men and women born in 1950 for earlier with some players in their 80’s taking the field each week. The league will hold tryouts for new players on Saturday, April 11th at Whispering Pines Park at Holiday City South.
