Were you aware that one of our summertime favorites can actually be deadly to your dog?

Here in New Jersey we are known for a number of foods including Sweet Jersey Corn.  Just add butter, salt, pepper and enjoy!  It's a staple for any BBQ and as much as we love it, it could be very dangerous for our fur-babies - not from being toxic like some other vegetables and fruits, but from the cob itself.  Unlike most foods, cobs don't digest at all in a dog's stomach and if left it will try and pass down the intestines, causing blockage and possible perforation.

So what to do if you suspect your dog has eaten one?  Let your vet know as soon as possible and watch for these signs:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or straining to have a bowel movement
  • Lethargy
  • Not eating

Remember: corn on the cob is not a natural chew toy, the same with bones that can splinter and also cause intestinal damage. Trust me I know how hard it is to resist those pitiful eyes while you're eating, but think about the consequences as well - if you love them as much as I do mine, you'll show your will power.
