The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association announced Monday the No. 1 seed Patriots would not be allowed to participate in the upcoming North 1 Group IV playoffs due to the ineligibility of three players who had played all season long.

The NJSIAA, which oversees high school athletics in the state, said the players failed "to establish a bona fide change of residence."

"This is an unfortunate situation, of course, and the administration of Wayne Township Public Schools is to be commended for immediately meeting its responsibility under the rules of our association," Steve Timko, NJSIAA executive director, said in a statement. "Self-reporting is truly the bedrock of the NJSIAA and I applaud Wayne for the commitment to the true spirit of scholastic athletics. I'm proud of them."

According to the association, the school district had just become aware that the players were possibly ineligible.

Because of the players' ineligibility, the team is required to forfeit any victories.

"I understand and greatly appreciate the hard work that our boys put into the season," said Superintendent of Schools Mark Toback. "I share the heartbreak this will cause our students, families, district and the Wayne Hills community."

Irvington becomes the new top seed in light of the disqualification and Northern Highlands gains admission to the tournament as the new eighth seed, the group said.
