NEWARK - The Elberon cleric caught laundering money in a 2006 federal sting is sentenced to five years in prison. Rabbi Eliahu Ben Haim admitted moving money for cooperating witness Solomon Dwek through an underground network, after being told the cash was illegal, and keeping 10 percent. A second defendant was sentenced to five years in a mental health facility.

LAKEWOOD - A motion hearing Friday in Toms River will determine whether Lakewood’s homeless dwellers can stay in tent city or be forced out. The decision concerns the township and county’s responsibilities to provide a shelter of last resort.

MANCHESTER – Manchester Police are investigating a New Year’s Day explosion involving a Sprite bottle. It happened in the area of Second Avenue in Pine Lake Park. No one was injured and no property was damaged. Police received calls that a dark colored vehicle with square rear taillights was seen fleeing the scene shortly after. Anyone with information should call police at 732-657-6111.

TOMS RIVER - There’s someone a whole lot richer in Ocean County today. The winning Cash Five jackpot of $315,000 from Satuday will be split three ways. One of the winners bought their ticket at the 7-11 on West Water Street in Toms River. The other two were in Bergen and Salem counties.

STAFFORD - Ocean County seniors, you’re under siege by phone and internet scammers, and county officials are offering an update on how to protect yourselves. The January 26th forum in Stafford features members of the Prosecutor’s and Surrogate’s offices, Consumer Affairs, Health And Senior Services. It’ll be in the Southern Service Center on Routes 9 and 72.

TOMS RIVER – The Ocean County Freeholders are set to re-organize today. Gerry Little is taking over the Director’s post for the year and John Bartlett will be the new Deputy Director. The meeting is set for 3:30 p.m. at the County Administration Building on Hooper Avenue in Toms River.

 

TRENTON - A Monmouth County Assemblyman is speaking out against red light cameras. Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon of the 12th district says recent YouTube video released by operators of the red light cameras prove the pilot program is a failure. O’Scanlon says we need to increase safety through sound engineering of intersections and proper light timing. 25 municipalities participate in the program that began in 2008.
