Wegmans recalls 1,000 pounds of chicken that were never inspected

More than 1,100 pounds of chicken sold by Wegmans have been recalled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Class 1 recall was issued Tuesday night after USDA inspectors discovered the supermarket chain changed its production schedule and the recalled items were produced when federal inspectors were not on site.

The USDA defines a Class 1 recall as one in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. The USDA said it has not received any complaints about the recalled chicken.

The affected products were made on Jan. 3. The items are:

• Approximately 1-pound vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Italian Flavored Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of Jan. 24, 2016.
• Approximately 1-pound vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Brown Sugar Barbecue Seasoned Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of Jan. 15, 2016.
• 3-pound vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Garlic & Fennel Whole Chicken Roaster” with a use-by date of Jan. 13, 2016.
• 1-pound. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wokery Sherry Chicken 27482” with use-by date of Jan. 13. 2016.

The recalled packages, which can be returned to the store for a full refund, have an establishment number “EST. or P-7567” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distribution and retail locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Wegmans has seven stores in New Jersey located in Bridgewater, Cherry Hill, Manalapan, Mt. Laurel, Ocean, Princeton and Woodbridge and has two more stores planned in Hanover and Montvale.
