What are the worst paying jobs in New Jersey?

If you’re feeling down in the dumps because you make so little money, would you take comfort in knowing that there are probably thousands of other people in New Jersey making less than you?

A new report by Zippia, a career online resource site for recent college graduates, has come out with a list of the worst paying jobs in the Garden State.

Here are the bottom five.

5. Dishwashers
Average annual salary: $20,920
Starting salary $17,900
Hourly pay (based on 40 hours of work for 52 weeks): $10.06
People employed in New Jersey: 10,170

4. Amusement and recreation attendants
Average annual salary: $20,810
Starting salary $17,800
Hourly pay: $10
People employed in New Jersey: 7,390

“That’s disappointing because I tend to want to trust the people that are running the machinery when I go to a carnival," said Zippia spokesman Nick Johnson said. "But if they’re not making a lot of money they’re probably not very skilled so that puts a little bit of scariness behind going to an amusement park. It’s something to think about the next time you go down the shore.”

3. Automotive and watercraft service attendants
Average annual salary: $20,510
Starting salary $17,900
Hourly pay: $9.86
People employed in New Jersey: 10,300

2. Shampooers
Average annual salary: $19,970
Starting salary $17,790
Hourly pay: $9.60
People employed in New Jersey: 2,090

So what job pays the least in the Garden State?

“The lowest paying job in New Jersey is, no surprise, servers at restaurants, cafeterias, people who work at coffee shops, they’re making about $19,500 a year not counting tips,” he said.

1. Counter attendants, cafeteria, food concession and coffee shop
Average annual salary: $19,840
Starting salary $17,800
Hourly pay: $9.54
People employed in New Jersey: 24,680

Other very low paying jobs include dining room helpers, cashiers, fast food preparation workers, lifeguards and packers and packagers at companies that send you things through the mail.

Johnson pointed out the other end of the spectrum, the highest paid workers, can be found in hospitals and medical offices.

Surgeons and orthodontists make more than $230,000. The average CEO in New Jersey makes $217,000.

Zippia used Bureau of Labor Statistics data to calculate what different professions pay.
