What’s Going on at the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May?

Dozens law enforcement, fire, EMS and military personnel will be in and around the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May today as part of it's first full scale anti terrorism drill.

Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Donnie Brzuska said the drill involves a simulated suicide bomb attack at the training center itself.

As a result, beginning around 9:30 a.m., residents can expect numerous first responders to speed off to the base, and positioned in front of the base. They may also see numerous police and EMS vehicles staged for the exercise in area neighborhoods as well. Brzuska said some folks may even hear yells coming from the base from those serving as injury victims.

Brzuska said they respond crises incidents around the world but they rarely focus on the possibility of a terrorist attack happening at their own training center. This exercise addresses that.

"First we want to be able to test our ability to defend against a terrorist attack aboard training center Cape May and then we want to test the community's ability to respond to a terrorist attack within the region.

In a press release, the Coast Guard said it's Cape May Training Center host more than 41,000 visitors each year and so federal, state and local law enforcement and EMS want to make sure the community is ready to respond in the event of an attack at the facility.
