It’s Friday the 13th which for some spells caution on what could be an unlucky day. . I being one of those who has never bought into any of that stuff (maybe because I feel every day is sort of unlucky).

The origin of this being a not-so-great day seems to be centered on the fact that in numerology 13 is an irregular number and also the number of witches you need to form a coven.  Then there is that biblical thing about the apostle Judas being the 13th guest to sit down at the last supper. He would later betray Jesus.

The Friday part is rather strange as there is nothing in history that links it with the 13th as being unlucky. Ironically we usually consider Friday the best day of the week or at least the work week.  However over time Friday the 13th has grown to be considered a day to fear with many cancelling trips, doctors’ appointments and more.

If you are one of those the good news is today is the only Friday the 13th on the calendar this year. However there are two next year (January & October).

A couple of quick hitters to wrap up the work week:

Toms River South has won its first baseball title of any kind since 2012 as the Indians clinched at least a share of the Class A South crown with a 3-2 victory over Brick Memorial as Justin Fall and Trevor Wagner combined on a 3-hitter.  Toms River North can tie South for the title with wins in their final two division games.

Another milestone for Donovan Catholic’s Alyssa Wilson who broke her own state record while winning the shot put Thursday during the Ocean County Track & Field Championships at Central Regional High School.  The Griffins junior twice threw 53 feet, 8.5 inches and has several upcoming championship meets to better those numbers.

The Pine Belt Arena on the campus of Toms River High School North will host the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Shore Conference Basketball Tournament next year with the event to leave the Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College.  The quarterfinals will be held over the weekend of February 18th and 19th with the semifinals to follow and the championship games will return to the MAC at Monmouth University.

This past winter the quarterfinals were at Brookdale with the semis at the Pine Belt Arena.  With the expanded schedule the district wrestling championships will return to Toms River High School East.
