The Shore Conference Basketball Tournament (boys)(girls) is to me the highlight of the basketball season…of course that is after the WOBM Christmas Classic. The tournament started earlier this week with the play-in games and it’s now down to 16 boys and 16 girls teams with those games set for tonight.

On the boys side Colts Neck is the top seed but this is clearly a wide-open field with Lakewood, Neptune and Middletown North all solid threats to take home the title won last year by Raritan, who can’t be overlooked.

TONIGHT’S GAMES:

Toms River South at Colts Neck

CBA at Lakewood

Point Boro at Neptune

Ocean at Jackson Memorial

Manasquan at Lacey

As for the girls well Manasquan beat St. Rose last weekend in a matchup of undefeated teams which decided the top seed. Those two along with St. John Vianney and defending champion Neptune make up a powerful quartet and they are favored to advance to the semifinals.

Tonight’s round of 16 matchups include:

Monsignor Donovan at Manasquan

Middletown North at Jackson Memorial

Middletown South at Point Boro

Colts Neck at St. Rose

All of tonight’s winners advance to the quarterfinals at Brookdale Community College with the girls playing those games on Saturday and the boys hitting the court Sunday. Brookdale will also host the semifinals next Tuesday and Wednesday and those games will be broadcast on our Shore Sports Network…we will also carry the championship games Friday, February 24th from Monmouth University.

By the way the Shore Conference Tournament used to be limited to 16 teams but is now open to all of those with a .500 record which I don’t like and never will.

Getting into the tournament should have to be earned not automatically given to those with a mediocre record, especially when teams add games down the stretch so they can qualify. I know I’m old school but frankly I’m old.
