A Golden Weekend [VIDEO]

You would never know yesterday was the middle of January by the number of people heading over the bridge to Seaside Heights. 

On an unseasonably warm winter Sunday it appears many decided to get their first look at what the beach areas look like two-and-a-half months after Superstorm Sandy.  For my wife Jane and me it was certainly not a first-look but it is still a stunning site to see mountains of debris and realize there are months and years of work ahead.

Visitors flocked to beach areas, many of which are off-limits and guarded by local and state police. However many were able to find their way close enough to get pictures in person of things they have only seen on TV.  The good news is more and more businesses are opening each week along the barrier island and hopefully they’ll be able to generate some revenue before the real tourism season begins. That is if we have a real tourism season.

Count me among those that stayed up to watch the Golden Globe Awards last night.  I can’t explain it but I’ve always had a fascination with the Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes in which about a hundred members of the Hollywood Foreign Press honor work in both movies and TV.

Clearly the highlights of the evening included Oscar-snubbed Ben Affleck winning best director for “Argo” which also came away with Best Motion Picture Drama.  “Les Miserables” and Hugh Jackman also collected popular wins and to the surprise of no one Daniel Day-Lewis received a globe award for “Lincoln.”  On the TV side it was a big night for my favorite “Homeland” along with the HBO series “Girls.”

What many will be talking about today is Jodie Foster’s speech after receiving a special career award in which she talked about everything from her sexual orientation, retirement, demand for privacy and her mother who has dementia.  It rambled a bit and was too long but it was different than most acceptance speeches.  Tina Fay and Amy Poehler were the perfect co-hosts for the show and I’d like to see them together again in the future.

Over my wife’s birthday weekend we saw “Silver Linings Playbook” which we both thought was tremendous and Bradley Cooper was great.  Plus it made Philadelphia Eagle fans look moronic at times which is always a nice touch.
