According to the Asbury Park Press, the city’s top cop notified City Council members of his decision to rescind his retirement. They say Kinmon didn’t want to leave the city while it was being plagued by gun violence.

Deputy Mayor Sue Henderson told the newspaper that she was relieved because it was one less top administrative position they would have to fill. The city is in the process of replacing its CFO and City Manager.

However, Mayor Myra Campbell says she’s surprised by Kinmon’s decision and is dissatisfied with the Police Department’s crime fighting efforts. She’s calling for more foot patrols, community policing efforts and a Civilian Review Board of police operations.

Asbury Park has seen at least 24 shootings this year.

Kinmon has served on the Police force for 24 years, six years as the city’s Chief.
