27 Shore Conference teams begin the quest this weekend to win a state sectional football championship. For some just being in the NJSIAA playoffs is an accomplishment while for others anything less than hoisting a championship trophy in early December would be a major disappointment.

There are five games this weekend matching shore teams against one another including the fourth meeting in two seasons between Brick and Jackson Memorial. Last year Brick won the regular season meeting before the Jaguars got revenge when they met in the playoffs and went on to win the Central Jersey Group 4 championship.

Last month the Green Dragons won a 2-0 slugfest in the rain and mud, a win that helped them claim a piece of the Class A South championship for the second straight year. In what is clearly a case of déjà vu all over again the teams meet tonight at Keller Memorial Field in Brick with the winner to advance to the sectional semifinals while the loser will see their season come to an end. This is the Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week and will be broadcast on the Shore Sports Network’s 1160/1310AM.

The other all-shore matchups find Jackson Liberty at Brick Memorial, Point Boro hosting Raritan, Keyport at Asbury Park and Donovan Catholic taking on powerful St. John Vianney. By the way, in consolation game action last night Toms River East and Manchester both collected their first wins of the season as the Raiders topped Marlboro 21-7 and the Hawks blanked Pleasantville 20-0. Southern also rallied to beat Vineland 13-9 in their season finale.

Congratulations to the girls soccer teams from Toms River South and Point Boro as they both won state sectional championships in dramatic fashion Thursday. The Indians claimed their second South Jersey Group 3 crown in three years with a 3-2 victory over Seneca thanks to Leah Canfield’s goal with 32 seconds left in the second overtime. Point Boro edged West Deptford 4-3 in the South Jersey Group 2 final on Kait Seitter’s second goal of the game just 21 seconds into overtime.
