Kathleen L. Mackey, 36, faces a count of causing death while driving with a suspended or revoked license. It's a third-degree charge, which customarily carries a possible sentence of three to five years if convicted.

Leslie Stein, 65, was struck as he swept the shoulder of Friendship Road in front of his house Wednesday afternoon, police said. Investigators later determined that her license was under suspension at the time.

Stein died later at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Howell Township Municipal Judge Susan Clark set bail at $30,000, allowing the option for release on payment of 10 percent, which Mackey posted, according to police.

The probe continues under the auspices of township police, and investigators with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART).

They seek information from witnesses or those with knowledge of circumstances that would inform the investigation. Contact Howell PD Patrolman Matthew Cerney, 732-938-4111, or Agent Reginald Grant, 800-533-7443.
