Distribution of a new batch of Potassium Iodide (KI) tablets begins next week to those who live and work within a ten mile radius of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station. Ocean County Health Department Spokeswoman Leslie Terjesen says this new batch replaces the round of pills they distributed five years ago and are set to expire this year. Terjesen explains the pills are just another tool for your emergency preparedness kits should a disaster occur.

"It can provide protection for the thyroid gland from radio active iodine and can reduce the risk of thyroid cancer after nuclear emergency," explains Terjesen.

According to the health department, KI pills are free and can be picked up for every household member. Even Grandparents and noncustodial parents can pick up pills for children who regularly visit. Terjesen said all they need to bring with them is proof they live within the ten mile radius.

"We ask that people bring either their license, their tax bill or if they work within the ten mile area, they bring their work i-d or pay stub they can get them," she said.

The pills are even provided to area schools.

Terjesen said they'll be distributing KI tablets at its flu clinics, with one that starts as early as Tuesday, September 23, in Berkeley Township at the Holiday City Club House from 10 am to 12 pm.

There will also be four KI tablet distribution clinics in October.
