Shelley Adler, wife of the late 3rd District Democratic Representative John Adler, officially kicked off her campaign for the seat Tuesday in Brick Township and Marlton.

Adler, who’s a Lawyer and former Cherry Hill Councilwoman, cited the need to continue the work of her late husband, help constituents through public service and the need to restore civility on Capitol Hill as the reasons why she chose to run for office.

Adler says if elected, she’ll support small businesses, Joint Base McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst and Veterans Services. “There’s no better investment in our country’s future than to help returning veterans with job placement, health care and continuing education.”

She also wants to address the issue of high gas prices that she believes can only be done by increasing domestic energy production across the board. “More oil, gas, wind, solar, hydro, coal and nuclear power. We need to do it all in a safe and responsible manner.” During her speech, Adler scolded House Republicans for approving $50 billion dollars in tax subsidies for big oil companies that raked in record profits last year.

Congressman Jon Runyan defeated John Adler in 2010. He died in 2011 when tissue around his heart became infected. The 3rd district represents Ocean and Burlington Counties after the recent redrawing of the State’s Congressional Maps.

In a press release from the Runyan for Congress Campaign:

Runyan for Congress spokesman Chris Russell says “While we thank Shelley Adler for visiting the 3rd Congressional District today, it’s unfortunate that she chose to kick off her campaign by attacking Congressman Runyan with a phony charge about Medicare reform that the non-partisan watchdog Politifact called ‘The Lie of the Year for 2011,’ and then refused to take a position on the costly, big government boondoggle called Obamacare.”
